I have a fond appreciation for vintage-inspired things, especially accessories. Tell me there’s something vintage looking and I will run for it. Going Vintage by Lindsey Leavitt seems like a perfect read, with a premise of a girl named Mallory who wishes for simpler times without technology so she tries to follow a list her grandmother made in 1962.
If Mallory were real, I’d totally want to be friends with her. Her voice throughout the novel just makes me want to be friends with her. Also, who decides to go vintage without a second thought after finding out your boyfriend cheated on you with an internet girlfriend? My girl, Mallory. She makes lists and tries to follow through with them, whereas I just make lists.
Mallory tries really hard to stick to 1962, from clothes to lack of technology, but sometimes she fails. She slips and uses Friendspace, a Facebook like social media, and occasionally the internet as well. What endears her to me are her failures because it proves that she’s human and it proves to her that living trying to live like people in 1962 but in present day is quite difficult.
Of course, Mallory comes to the conclusion that living in the 60’s might not be as simple as she thought it would be and that people have their own problems, regardless of what era they live in. It’s as true a lesson as any and Lindsey Leavitt gets it across without being cliché.
Ultimately, Going Vintage was an incredibly great read, funny, smart and real. It was nice to have other character’s problems interwoven throughout the book so fluidly as well and I’m looking forward to Leavitt’s other works!
In the spirit of Going Vintage, I created a printable note, which you can use to write your own lists. It was inspired by the mod look of the 60's and I hope you like it!
To download, you can find the Going Vintage-inspired printable here. Please save the image and print on standard U.S-size paper (8.5in x 11in). Cut on the outer black line. Each note sheet is approximately 3 in by 7in.
