Night World

If the shoe fits, then you will be my princess.
from the Disney movie, Cinderella

I was shopping with my mom at T.J. Maxx (you know, that store with cheap off-season designer clothes?) , oh so many moons ago when I found this book for one dollar, a tenth of the original price.  I had bought it immediately. After all, how many new books do you come across that sell for one dollar?

In middle school, I was exposed to The Vampire Diaries by L. J. Smith. This was after my Twilight phase had peaked, but I still was on a vampire craze (still in effect...). This was way before the whole CW Vampire Diaries craze, so the books were largely unknown.

I went onto L. J. Smith's website, and I remember reading, "If you like my books, write to my publisher (Simon and Schuster) to have my other novels released again." That was eons ago. A couple years later, the Vampire Diaries craze was just starting and the books that she had written using the name, Lisa Jane Smith, were released again.

Night World No. 3 is actually made up of three books, Huntress, Black Dawn and Witchlight. The first two were written in 197, and the latter was written in 1998. There is a strong "the world is going to end at the turn of the millennium" vibe, due to the fact that the books were written in the late 90's. (Many thought the world is going to end in the year 2000. Now, people are thinking the world is going to end this year. No, we're all going to be fine, I'm pretty sure.)

The individual stories are similar. They're all Cinderella-ish stories, with dashing princes, who all fall in love with normal girls. The girls are not weak, but rather strong in their own way, which is the antithesis of the Cinderella theme. However, the novels still follow the "happily ever after" endings, with someone being saved, and the two characters finding that their love works. Another typical YA plot.

The writing isn't amazing, but that's not the reason why people like L. J. Smith's novels. They come for the fantasy world that she creates, with all the magic and mythical creatures.  The world that she creates are filled with humans, shapeshifters, werewolves, vampires and witches, with everyone co-existing under one medieval-like council. The world is pretty interesting all right.

Rating: 3/5 Interesting story, but the plot was a little-too textbook YA.
